Getting a new puppy can be an exciting and stressful time. The best way to keep everyone healthy and happy is to get organized and prepared before you bring your puppy home. We have comprised a new puppy check list to help you get started on the right foot with your new furry family member!
Getting prepared
Step1. we recommend you visit the Puppy Stages page to learn about puppy behaviors from early in life all the way to adulthood.
Step2. Get your home prepared for your puppy's arrival. Here are a few things to consider to keep your puppy safe. Don't leave electrical cords exposed and within your puppy's reach. Block any stairs to avoid injury. Keep human foods out of reach to avoid tummy upset or accidental poisoning. Secure trash cans and keep human foods, medications and toxic plants out of reach. Keep small objects and smelly clothing off the floor and our of reach. Keep your yard escape proof and your puppy confined or crated if you are not at home or able to supervise your puppy. Keep a first aid kit on hand and your veterinarians phone number on hand incase or an emergency.
Step3. To validate your puppy's health contract, you must have your puppy examined by a licensed veterinarian within 3 business days of possession of your puppy. We highly suggest getting an appointment set up prior to your puppy's arrival home.
Step4. Get your puppy signed up for pet health insurance. We have partnered with Trupanion Medical Pet Insurance to help provide additional support for our Clients and their new Puppy. FEEDING GUIDE Feed your puppy 3 x's a day at the same time each day until they are about 4 months old. Then change to twice daily. It is harder to house break a puppy that always has access to a full bowl of food. We do not recommend free feeding unless you see they are not eating a complete meal at one setting. Abstaining from eating at first is not unusual and we suggest adding a sprinkle of warm water to food to help to entice their appetite.
Food Amounts may very from puppy to puppy so we suggest starting with 1/2 to 3/4 cup of food at the morning meal and adjust more or less at the next feeding. Most Science Diet® foods have a feeding guide on the package to help you determine the proper amount to feed your pet However, the feeding guide is intended as a starting point. It's critical to your pet's health that his or her physical condition be monitored regularly and the feeding amount adjusted as needed.
COCONUT OIL We highly recommend adding coconut oil to your dogs diet. Add 1 tsp per 10 lbs of body weight to your dogs food twice a day. Make sure you purchase coconut oil that is labeled as... UNREFINED, ORGANIC, COLD PRESSED, EXTRA VIRGIN.

Make sure your puppy is current on his/her vaccinations and are administered by a licensed veterinarian

Limit exposure to other puppies or dogs unless you know, for sure, they have been fully vaccinated.

Limit exposure to people who may have come in contact with an unvaccinated or sick dog.

Avoid heavily trafficked areas such as playgrounds, parks and pet stores until your puppy is fully vaccinated

Until your puppy is fully vaccinated, do not allow exposure to the lobby floor of your vets office.
